The SCORM standard

SCORM; stands for 'Sharable Content Object Reference Model'. It is a a specification for e-learning content that is independent of any given 'Learning Management System' or ' LMS'. It is a widely recognised standard for e-learning used all over the world by many educational institutions.

Advantages

The main advantages are:

  • Most LMSs support SCORM;, so SCORM; courses will work on most most LMSs.
  • Course content is turned into a collection of 'learning objects' that can used to multiple courses.
  • Courses can be accessed over the web, meaning students can participate in them 24/7
  • SCORM; courses interact with the LMS, so student's performance can be tracked;
    completion, scores, and so on, can all be recorded and reported upon
  • You can modify courses as requirements change

SCORM Versions

There are two main versions of the SCORM; standard. SCORM; 1.2 and SCORM; 2004. SCORM; 2004 is the most recent version.

SCORM; 2004 is probably the best way to go. ADL (Advanced Distributed Learning) who maintain the SCORM; standard no longer test or maintains SCORM; 1.2. SCORM; 2004 also offers more than SCORM; 1.2.

  • What a student can do in a course is often displayed as a series of activities. The student can choose what to do.
  • SCORM; 2004 allows you to add rules to the course to guide the student through the course. To change the sequence of
    content, navigate from one thing to the next depending on certain criteria and so on. This 'adaptive sequencing' is not available in SCORM; 1.2. Consequently, most many SCORM; 1.2 courses have unique built-in ways of doing this. SCORM; 2004 allows for a more standardised way of doing it.
  • SCORM; 2004 has a clearer approach of tracking; tracking multiple learning objectives, scores, and so on. Some information can
    even be shared between SCOs via the LMS.
  • Interrupted sessions can be resumed more easily in SCORM; 2004 - it has more support for this.
